Didi Chuxing
Didi Chuxing (“DiDi”) is a world-leading mobile transportation platform. The company offers a full range of app-based transportation options for users across the world, including taxi hailing, private car hailing, social ride-sharing, bike sharing, and food delivery. It is headquartered in Beijing and founded by Cheng Wei, who used to work for Alibaba. The company was formed from the merger of rival firms Didi Dache and Kuaidi Dache (backed by the two largest Chinese Internet companies, Tencent and Alibaba respectively), and was initially valued (as of June 2016) at approximately US$28 billion. DiDi acquired Uber's China unit in 2016. The company has been working with a growing alliance of automobile partners to build a next-generation auto-solutions and operations platform, including Grab, Lyft, Ola, Uber, 99, Taxify and Careem. DiDi operates in a few countries outside of China, such as its ride-hailing services in Brazil, Mexico, and Australia, and provides taxi-hailing services in Japan through a joint venture. Recently, the company has also been involved in other areas of mobility such as autonomous driving and artificial intelligence (AI).

Cheng Wei founded Beijing Orange Technology Co Ltd. in 2012, and soon launched Didi Dache, a taxi-hailing app. In February 2015, the company merged with Kuaidi Dache, another key market player, to become Didi Kuaidi (later renamed Didi Chuxing). In August 2016, Didi Chuxing acquired Uber China. Over a course of five years, Cheng Wei led DiDi to become the world’s leading mobile transportation platform, which offers a full range of app-based transportation-related options for 550 millions of users with over 31 million drivers and car owners on its platform. Today, Cheng Wei and his team continue to push for the frontier of innovation as it strives to become a global leader in the revolution in transportation and automotive technology- the world’s largest one-stop transportation platform, the world’s largest operator of vehicle networks and a global leader in smart transportation technologies. DiDi leverages its AI capabilities to promote the transformation of the taxi industry and public transportation system. It also launched extensive public-private partnerships with cities on smart transportation and sustainability initiatives. In 2018, Cheng Wei was named on the list of 50 Most influential business leaders in China by Forbes. He also ranked alongside Jean Liu, President of DiDi, on Vanity Fair’s New Establishment List.
