Tencent is an internet-based technology and cultural enterprise founded in 1998 by Pony Ma (马化腾). The conglomerate’s subsidiaries specialize in various Internet-related services and products, entertainment, artificial intelligence and technology both in China and globally. It is based in Shenzhen, China. Tencent offers a diverse array of services including social network, music, web portals, e-commerce, mobile games, internet services, payment systems, smartphones, and multiplayer online games. The two giant instant messenging apps made by Tencent are WeChat and QQ. The two have helped bolster Tencent's continued expansion into smartphone services, and has been credited as one of the world's most powerful apps. Tencent also provides financial technology and mobile payment solutions to support the development of smart cities, smart transport and smart retail. Tencent partners with a range of enterprises to lead digital transformation across important pillars of the economy, including manufacturing, healthcare, retail and education. Tencent launched the Tencent Foundation in 2007, the first charitable foundation by an internet enterprise in China.
Pony Ma is one of Tencent’s Co-Founders and currently serves as Chairman of the Board and Chief Executive Officer. Pony oversees strategic development, overall direction and management of Tencent. Before founding Tencent in 1998, Pony led research and development for the internet paging system at China Motion Telecom Development Limited, a telecommunications services and products provider in China. He has more than 20 years of experience in the telecommunications and Internet industries. Pony received his Bachelor of Science degree in Computer Science from Shenzhen University in 1993.
